Sound familiar?

If this is new, you’re not imagining it.

Research suggests shifting hormones affect more than hot flashes. Many women notice changes in digestion, hydration and bathroom habits through perimenopause and after.

  • Bloated by mid-afternoon

  • Regular for 40 years, suddenly not

  • Different since starting HRT

  • Up at 3 a.m. to pee. Again.

  • Peeing more than I used to

  • Thirsty after a night of sweats

  • Trying magnesium. Is it working?

  • Told it’s “just stress”

Why it happens

Why midlife changes what happens in the bathroom.

  • Hormones help set your gut’s pace.

Research suggests estrogen and progesterone influence how quickly things move through your gut and how sensitive it feels. In a study that followed women through the transition, bloating tended to be more intense during perimenopause.

  • The science is still catching up.

Studies don’t all agree on how menopause affects the gut microbiome; a 2026 meta-analysis found no consistent differences. That’s one more reason to learn your own patterns.

  • Your bladder feels it, too.

Bladder changes are among the most common midlife experiences, and many women never mention them. In one study of women aged 40 to 50, needing the bathroom was the most common reason for waking at night (81%), well ahead of feeling too hot (26%).

  • New routines and medications change things.

Starting or changing a medication or supplement, including hormone therapy, can change bathroom habits for some people. Digestive changes are among the most commonly reported effects of GLP-1 medications, especially early on.

Sources: Mulak et al. (2014) and Kamp et al. (2026) on hormones and the gut; Saravinovska et al. (2026) on the microbiome; Jones et al. (2018) on waking at night; FDA prescribing information on GLP-1 medications.

Throne doesn’t diagnose or treat any condition. It shows your patterns against your own baseline so you and your clinician can decide what to do. If you notice blood, fever or severe pain, contact a clinician.

Go like usual. Throne does the tracking.

Your midlife questions, and what Throne tracks

Why am I so bloated?

Log bloating in your Journal. Gut Health Coach (beta, opt-in) looks across your history for what your better and worse days have in common: food, alcohol, routine, a treatment change.

Am I still regular?

How often you go, what time of day, and stool form on the Bristol scale, compared with your own normal. Stool form reflects how fast things move better than frequency alone does.

What’s normal for me now?

Throne learns your new baseline, from how often you go to how often you pee, including at night. Real changes stand out, and small blips don’t.

Am I drinking enough?

An estimated hydration score from urine concentration at every visit, overnight too. It’s one signal, not a verdict. Log night sweats or a hot day in your Journal and see how your trend compares.

Before and after

Midlife is a season of experiments. Throne keeps the record.

A new routine. More fiber, more protein, creatine or magnesium. Less wine. A prescription change. Log what changed in your Journal, and see how your bathroom patterns line up before and after.

  1. Weeks 1–4

    Start your baseline.

Throne logs every visit on its own. After a month you know your mix: here, 58% of stools in the healthy range, with plenty of loose days.

  2. Week 5

    Add more fiber.

Over the next four weeks, healthy stools rise to 70%. Loose days still show up, so there’s more to learn.

  3. Week 9

    Cut back on alcohol.

Four weeks later, 86% of stools are in the healthy range, up from 58% at the start. Now you know which changes are worth keeping.

Bring proof, not just a feeling.

Clinicians often ask how often, since when, and how much it’s changed. Throne keeps a running log of your visits, including at night, and turns it into an easy-to-read 90-day PDF: stool consistency, frequency, hydration, and daytime vs. nighttime visits. Share it with your gynecologist, menopause specialist, GI doctor, dietitian or pelvic floor PT.

Midlife questions, answered

All FAQs
Will Throne tell me if I’m in perimenopause or menopause?

No. Throne doesn’t measure hormones and can’t diagnose perimenopause, menopause or any condition. It tracks your gut, hydration and bathroom patterns so you can see what’s changing and share it with your clinician.

Can Throne tell me if something is wrong?

No. Throne shows your trends against your own baseline and doesn’t diagnose anything. If you have pain, burning or fever, or see blood, contact a clinician.

I’m starting or changing a medication. Can Throne help?

You can log the change in your Journal and see how your bathroom patterns line up before and after. Throne doesn’t evaluate medications or side effects, and some changes won’t show a clear pattern. Talk to your prescriber before changing anything.

Does Throne count nighttime bathroom visits?

Yes. Throne records the time of each visit, and your 90-day summary shows daytime and nighttime (10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) frequency.

What about urinary flow?

Flow-rate measurements are only available for stand-to-pee sessions. For sit-down sessions, Throne tracks hydration, frequency and timing.

Will my period affect my readings?

Menstruation can temporarily read as lower hydration. Log your period in your Journal so your trends make sense in context, which helps if your cycle has become irregular or heavy.

Is there a camera? Who sees my data?

Yes. It points into the bowl and only records when it recognizes your phone or you press your button. Your data is encrypted, and Throne will never share your health information without your permission. You can export your data and request deletion at any time.

Can I share it with my doctor?

Yes. Export a 90-day PDF summary or a CSV, or show the app at your appointment.

Will it fit my toilet?

Throne fits most standard residential white toilets with a rim up to 2.25 inches. It also works alongside many bidet setups.

Can my partner use it too?

Yes. Up to six people can share one Throne, each with a private account and their own $6/month membership. The first two members to pair with a device each get their first 3 months included.

Can I pay with HSA or FSA?

Yes. Pay with eligible HSA/FSA funds through Truemed at checkout and save up to 30%.

What if it’s not for me?

Every Throne comes with a 30-day home trial. If it isn’t right for you, send it back.
